Mansfield/Nova Swim Squad member Sam Hynd (now studying in Swansea) secured his third gold medal in the IPC European Championships in Iceland, which concluded on Saturday 24 October.
In Sam’s last individual race, the SM8 200m Individual Medley, he powered through the field on the breaststroke and freestyle legs to take the Gold medal, in 2.28.18, just outside his own European record.
The event was a 1-2-3 for Great Britain, with Richard Howard and Tom Young taking the silver and bronze respectively.
Sam completed a hat-trick of Gold medals when he will be awarded Gold for competing in the heats of the 34 point 4x100m Freestyle Team. In the final Jonathon Fox, Graham Edmunds, Matthew Walker and Robert Welbourne, took the gold in fantastic style.
This takes Sam’s total for the week three gold and one silver:
Men’s S8 400m Freestyle - Gold
Men’s SM8 200m Ind Medley - Gold
Men’s 34 Point 4x100m Freestyle Team - Gold (heats)
Men’s 34 Point 4x100m Medley Team - Silver
Mansfield’s Charlotte Henshaw, also had a good final night of competition, finishing fourth in the Women’s SM8 200m Individual Medley, in a new best time.
This again completes a fantastic week for Charlotte, after earlier winning her first gold medal at a major international competition when she became the European Champion in the SB6 100m Breaststroke.
Charlotte also swam within a whisker of a bronze medal in the S8 400m Freestyle, taking fourth place.
