Rebecca Adlington (Nova Centurion) put Mansfield on the map in the early hours of this morning when she came from behind to win the Olympic Gold medal by 7 hundreths of a second over USA's Katie Hoff. Jo Jackson (Loughborough University) finished in fantastic style to join her GB team mate on the podium in 3rd place and taking the bronze medal. Adlington left it until the last 10 metres to take the Gold medal out of the grips of Katie Hoff in a time of 4:03:52
Adlington has broken a 48 year drought of female GB gold medallists in the pool and become the first ever Gold medallist for Britain in the Women's 400m freestyle. Not only that, but along with team mate and good friend, Jo Jackson, they have become the first British women to share the Olympic podium and gain medals in the Olypmic pool since 1984, when Sarah Hardcastle and June Croft won silver and bronze respectively in the same event.
Despite winning the Olympic Games an emotional but composed Adlington said “I was disappointed with the time, it was a bit slow compared to yesterday but I raced which is what I had to do.” She was keen to thank her family who are at home in the UK, friends, coaches and everyone else who has helped her achieve the Olympic title.
And to think, the 400m is not even Adlington's strongest event!
